School counselors help students in a number of ways, for instance, they provide:

• Academic skills support

• Organizational, study and test-taking skills

• Education in understanding self and others

• Coping strategies

• Peer relationships and effective social skills

• Communication, problem-solving, decision-making and conflict resolution

• Career awareness, exploration and planning

• Substance abuse education

• Multicultural/diversity awareness

• Academic planning

• Education in understanding of self, including strengths and weaknesses

• Individual and small group counseling

National School Counseling Week Update!

National School Counseling Week 2008 was a blast! Student's learned valuable life lessons, eighth graders completed 4-year educational plans and the whole school was in competition to see who knew Mrs. Ahlgren the best. Teachers also nominated students who contributed to the positive learning environment at Herrin Middle School for the Tiger Spirit Award. A special thank you goes out to all of the students who made posters for the week and wore the stickers on Monday to kick the week off.
